I make hand-painted pottery in my garage studio under the name Dead Garden. It's all very wabi sabi — embracing the imperfections and celebrating the unique nature of each piece. I consider my work to be brutalist in form; at the wheel I seek out primitive shapes. My painting style is primarily inspired by music, especially the push and pull, the place where fluidity and rigidity meet; the band playing behind the beat, the guitar in time but slightly out of tune. I paint in bright colors with underglaze to create a juxtaposition with the slabby forms. I try to capture a duality; I want my pieces to be composed but a little wild at the same time.
